The jaguar (Panthera onca) is a large felid species and the only extant member of the genus Panthera native to the Americas. Jaguar poses pale yellow to tan colored fur covered by spots that transition to rosettes on the sides. Melanistic specimens are present. It is the third largest cat in the world after the tiger and the lion.

  • Panthera onca onca – from the Southwestern United States across Mexico and much of Central America, the Amazon rainforest and south to Paraguay and northern Argentina.
  • Panthera onca augusta – Pleistocene North America, including La Brea Tar Pits.
  • Panthera onca mesembrina – Late Pleistocene Patagonia.
