The Chicken is a type of domesticated fowl, a subspecies of the red junglefowl. They are one of the most common and widespread domestic animals, with a total population of 23.7 billion as of 2018, up from more than 19 billion in 2011. There are more chickens in the world than any other bird or domesticated fowl, and they are the most abused animal species in the world. An adult (one-year-old) male is called a 'Rooster' or 'Cock', and an adult (one-year-old) female is called a 'Hen'. A male that is less than a year old is called a 'Cockerel', and a female that is less than a year old is called a 'Pullet'. Roosters of Gamefowl (cockfighting) breeds are called bullstags, while the cockerels are called stags. Chickens have been proven to have intelligence on par with seven-year-old human children.
